Netherlands-based agricultural technology leader Lely introduced three major innovations—Astronaut A5 Next, Astronaut Max, and Lely Hub—during its Future Farm Days event. These future-proof automatic milking and digital farm security solutions are aimed at enhancing efficiency, animal welfare, and data protection in modern dairy farms. The rollout has implications for large-scale dairy operations in regions like California, USA, where dairy automation and resilience are rapidly growing priorities.
Netherlands-based dairy technology company Lely, a global pioneer in automated farming solutions, launched three groundbreaking technologies—Astronaut A5 Next, Astronaut Max, and Lely Hub—at its Future Farm Days held on June 24, 2025. These innovations aim to transform large-scale dairy farming, including operations in U.S. states like California, by improving animal welfare, boosting productivity, and ensuring digital resilience on modern farms.
Speaking at the event, CEO André van Troost emphasized, “Business continuity is crucial for our farmers. Both in terms of milking reliability and digital safety.” He highlighted how the new lineup is designed to meet evolving challenges in dairy production and management.
Astronaut A5 Next: Smart Milking Enhanced
Astronaut A5 Next builds upon the success of Lely’s Astronaut A5 robot, offering new software capabilities, improved remote serviceability, and vision-based robotic arms that precisely identify and attach to the cow’s teats. A built-in automatic milk filter further streamlines the milking routine, while the integration of Eartag ID enhances animal health tracking.
Astronaut Max: Built for Large-Scale Efficiency
Targeting operations with 500–1100 cows, Astronaut Max is a centralized system that connects up to 18 milking robots. It handles peripheral needs such as vacuum, cleaning, milk transport, and udder care—all from a single control hub. By separating cleaning and milking operations, Max ensures minimal downtime and optimal throughput.
Lely Hub: Protecting Digital Infrastructure
The newly launched Lely Hub acts as a digital firewall and connector between Lely robots and the farm’s computing environment. It boosts cybersecurity, ensures smoother operation of Lely’s Horizon management platform, and offers peace of mind to tech-savvy farmers dealing with growing data streams from modern sensors and automation tools.
U.S. and Global Impact
While A5 Next is now available globally via Lely Centers, the U.S. rollout for both A5 Next and Astronaut Max is scheduled post-local validation in 2026. This phased strategy is expected to benefit large dairy-producing states such as California, where automation and precision farming are essential due to labor shortages and high operating costs.
These advancements align with broader trends in smart agriculture and position Lely as a key player in enabling the “Farm of the Future.” For more visuals and press materials, visit Lely’s press kit.
