On June 25, 2025, in a major cross-border dairy collaboration, Spain-based Covap and India’s Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), known for its Amul brand, announced a strategic agreement to produce Amul Gold milk in Europe. This partnership marks Amul’s official entry into the European market, with distribution beginning in Spain and Portugal.
In a landmark international dairy alliance, Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de Los Pedroches (Covap), a Spanish dairy cooperative headquartered in Pozoblanco, Andalusia, has entered a formal partnership with India’s Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul) to produce and distribute Amul Gold milk for European markets. The agreement was signed at the Indian Embassy in Spain in the presence of Ambassador Dinesh K. Patnaik.
Amul Gold, a premium Indian milk brand known for its high-fat content and rich texture, will be manufactured using Covap’s dairy resources but modified to contain at least 6% fat, in line with Amul’s standards. Covap’s Director of International, Juan Antonio Ballesteros, confirmed that the partnership required no major industrial adaptations, with Amul overseeing packaging in its early stages to ensure quality assurance.
Initial distribution will begin in Spain and Portugal, with subsequent expansion to Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. This move signifies Amul’s first production and distribution venture in Europe, emphasizing India’s expanding dairy influence abroad.
Carlos Metha, Managing Director of Amul, highlighted the strategic value of Covap’s production standards and reputation, expressing optimism about European consumers embracing India’s signature dairy richness. The initiative aims to enhance not only Amul’s global reach but also raise awareness of Spanish dairy excellence internationally.
With over 3.6 million dairy producers, Covap is one of Spain’s most influential cooperatives. Its collaboration with Amul aligns with both organizations’ commitment to long-term excellence, innovation, and international market expansion.
This India-Spain partnership showcases the evolving globalization of dairy supply chains, where cooperative strength and product authenticity form the backbone of sustainable cross-continental trade.
