FrieslandCampina is optimizing its production network in the Netherlands by consolidating operations at Leeuwarden, relocating cheese production from Born, and eliminating 186 jobs.
FrieslandCampina, one of the world’s largest dairy cooperatives, has announced plans to optimise its production network in the Netherlands. The company aims to enhance its efficiency, sustainability, and future viability through strategic adjustments in its operations. These changes will impact the production sites in Leeuwarden and Born, leading to the relocation of several operations and the eventual closure of certain facilities.
About FrieslandCampina
FrieslandCampina is a leading multinational dairy company, owned by approximately 18,000 farmers. The company provides a wide range of dairy products, including ingredients for the food and beverage industry and consumer goods such as cheese, milk, and yogurt. With a commitment to sustainability and innovation, FrieslandCampina operates globally, focusing on providing high-quality dairy products while minimising environmental impact.
Strategic Changes in Leeuwarden
As part of its optimisation efforts, FrieslandCampina will concentrate its activities at the southern part of its Leeuwarden production site. The northern part of the site will eventually be closed due to inefficiencies and the high costs associated with maintaining that area. This restructuring will streamline operations, improve logistics, and reduce the need for significant investments in the renewal of the northern area. The transition is expected to be gradual, with the production of sweetened condensed milk shifting to Hochwald in Bolsward as part of a strategic partnership. This move is anticipated to complete by June 1, 2026.
These changes will lead to the elimination of 87 jobs out of the 927 currently at the Leeuwarden site. FrieslandCampina has assured its employees that it will support them in finding new roles, either within the company or externally.
Closure of Cheese Production Facility in Born
In another significant move, FrieslandCampina will relocate the production of natural cheese from its Born facility to Workum. The closure of the Born site, which is expected to occur by May 10, 2025, will result in the loss of 99 jobs. This move is part of FrieslandCampina’s larger strategy to consolidate operations and streamline production across its network.
Employee Support and Future Plans
FrieslandCampina has communicated these changes to its employees and trade unions, ensuring that those impacted by the closures will receive assistance. Employees with permanent contracts will be supported through the FrieslandCampina Social Plan, which helps them find new employment within or outside the organisation.
FrieslandCampina must continue to operate cost-effectively, sustainably, and in a future-proof manner. We are aware of the significant impact that these changes will have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”
David Cutter, Chief Supply Chain and Research & Development Officer at FrieslandCampina
FrieslandCampina’s steps to optimise its production network reflect its ongoing commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and the long-term viability of its business. As the company continues to adapt to market demands and global challenges, these strategic adjustments will enable FrieslandCampina to maintain its competitive edge in the dairy industry while supporting its workforce during this period of change.
