Authorities in Ludhiana, Punjab, have taken legal action against four dairy owners for repeatedly dumping untreated cow dung on roads, causing severe pollution concerns. The municipal corporation and Ludhiana Urban Water and Wastewater Management Limited filed complaints after the waste was found flowing into Buddha Nullah. The action follows criticism from Punjab’s governor regarding inadequate water treatment facilities.
Authorities in Ludhiana, Punjab, have taken strict action against four dairy owners for illegally dumping untreated cow dung on roads, causing significant pollution concerns. The complaint was filed by Ludhiana Urban Water and Wastewater Management Limited, highlighting that the waste was flowing into Buddha Nullah, a major water body in the city. Despite repeated warnings from the municipal corporation, the dairy owners allegedly continued the illegal disposal, prompting legal action.
Repeated Violations Lead to Legal Action
The municipal authorities had been issuing notices to dairy owners operating along the Tajpur Road Dairy Complex, urging them to adopt proper waste management practices. However, their continued negligence led to the filing of a formal complaint by the municipal corporation officials. Based on this, the Division Number 7 police station registered a case against four dairy owners under sections related to water pollution and public health violations.
Governor’s Criticism Spurs Action
The crackdown comes shortly after Punjab’s governor visited Ludhiana and criticized the city officials for their failure to ensure proper treatment of wastewater at the Effluent Treatment Plant. This prompted local authorities to tighten regulations and take action against polluters, including those in the dairy sector.
Environmental Concerns and Public Health Risks
The dumping of untreated cow dung and wastewater into open areas and drains poses a serious risk to public health. The polluted water entering Buddha Nullah further contaminates local water sources, affecting residents and agricultural lands. The municipal corporation has reiterated its commitment to enforcing stricter waste management regulations and warned of more legal action against offenders.
Authorities have urged dairy owners to comply with waste disposal regulations and adopt sustainable practices to prevent further environmental degradation. The municipal corporation is also considering new measures to monitor and control pollution from dairy farms in the city.
