The US state of Vermont has reported a dramatic rise in its dairy industry’s economic value, with the annual impact nearly doubling over the last decade, according to the latest “Vermont Dairy Delivers” report by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.

The dairy industry in Vermont, United States, has experienced a significant surge in its economic contribution, according to the newly released “Vermont Dairy Delivers” report. Published by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, the report highlights the growing importance of dairy farmers and processors in driving the state’s economy and environmental sustainability.

As per the report, Vermont’s dairy industry now generates USD 5.4 billion annually, a sharp increase from USD 2.6 billion a decade ago. The growth is credited to the dedication of local farmers and producers, alongside a growing demand for dairy exports on the global market. The number of dairy processors has also risen dramatically from 95 to 158 over the past ten years.

In 2023, the average American consumed 661 pounds of dairy, a record high and over 40 pounds more than in past decades. Vermont alone produces 63% of New England’s fluid milk, cementing its critical role in the region’s dairy supply chain.

Beyond economic achievements, Vermont’s dairy sector is also noted for its commitment to sustainability. The Cow Power Program, a renewable energy initiative, has successfully captured 73,000 tons of methane, reflecting the industry’s proactive stance on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Anson Tebbetts, Vermont’s Secretary of Agriculture, praised the industry’s resilience and contribution to both the economy and the environment. The report was commissioned by the Vermont Dairy Promotion Council, further showcasing the sector’s ongoing evolution and impact.

With continued investment in innovation, sustainability, and global market engagement, Vermont’s dairy industry stands as a powerful driver of economic prosperity and environmental stewardship in the U.S. agricultural landscape.
