Fonterra, the largest dairy cooperative in New Zealand and one of the world’s top dairy exporters, has initiated a pilot program in the Waikato region to implement its new EcoPond system. This advanced system is designed to reduce methane emissions from effluent ponds—one of the key contributors to agricultural greenhouse gases.

The EcoPond system functions by treating effluent with a mix of chemicals that limit the production of methane during storage. The technology not only reduces harmful emissions but also improves the nutrient quality of the effluent, potentially enhancing its use as a sustainable fertilizer.

This initiative is part of Fonterra’s broader strategy to meet climate targets and enhance on-farm sustainability. The cooperative has emphasized that innovations like EcoPond are crucial for reducing the environmental footprint of the dairy sector while maintaining global competitiveness.

Initial feedback from participating farms in the Waikato region has been promising, with noticeable reductions in methane output and positive engagement from farmers. If successful, Fonterra plans to scale the EcoPond system across its nationwide supply chain.
