Tesco, Arla, and Müller UK & Ireland have launched the Future Dairy Partnership to drive sustainability in the UK dairy sector, aiming for a 30% emission reduction by 2030.

Tesco has announced a transformative collaboration with major dairy suppliers Arla and Müller UK & Ireland, unveiling the Future Dairy Partnership. This initiative aims to tackle climate change impacts in the UK dairy sector by setting ambitious goals for carbon emission reduction, improving animal welfare, and fostering sustainable farming practices nationwide.

The partnership encompasses 400 farmers from Tesco’s Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) and invites wider industry engagement to build a more resilient dairy supply chain. The goal is a 30% reduction in on-farm emissions by 2030, aligning with Tesco’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture.

“We must work together as an industry to make transformational improvements.”

Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s chief commercial officer

This partnership will leverage the expertise of farmers to implement and test nature-based solutions for reducing carbon emissions. A new Sustainable Dairy Blueprint will guide these efforts, outlining specific targets while allowing flexibility for individual farm operations.

The initiative also features innovation projects, a farmer-led focus group to explore carbon-reducing technologies, and an industry-wide report detailing best practices and financial needs for sustainable advancements. Will Hosford of Arla and Dave Jones of Müller, co-chairs of TSDG, stressed the importance of sharing expertise to ensure a sustainable future for dairy.

Leaders from Arla Foods UK and Müller Milk & Ingredients highlighted the collaborative nature of the partnership.

“Our commitment is clear—we’re working with Tesco and Arla to create a better future for dairy.”

Rob Hutchison, Müller’s CEO

The initiative aspires to set new standards in the UK dairy industry, balancing environmental responsibilities with the delivery of high-quality dairy products.
