Amul is investing $72 million to establish the world’s largest curd production facility in Kolkata, West Bengal, expanding its dairy operations.
Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, will invest $72 million (₹600 crore) in an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. The facility will house the world’s largest curd production unit with a daily capacity of 1 million kg, according to GCMMF Managing Director Jayen Mehta.
GCMMF, India’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, represents 3.6 million farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat and processes 300 lakh liters of milk daily through its 18 member unions. The cooperative is ranked eighth among the world’s top 20 dairy companies in milk processing by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN).
The investment was committed during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025, which concluded on February 6. Mehta stated that the total milk processing capacity of the new facility will be 1.5 million liters per day.
Boosting Dairy Production in West Bengal
The state-of-the-art plant will be set up in Sankrail Food Park, Howrah, in two phases by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Anand. The move aligns with growing consumer demand for curd varieties like ‘tok doi’ and ‘mishti doi,’ which are popular in West Bengal.
Amul already leads the fresh milk market in the state, selling over 1 million liters per day. The brand has established a strong milk procurement network across 14 districts, supporting over 120,000 women milk producers.
Strengthening the Dairy Sector Under White Revolution 2.0
Mehta emphasized that the new plant will contribute to White Revolution 2.0, an initiative by the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India, aimed at strengthening dairy cooperatives.
GCMMF’s turnover grew 8% in FY 2023-24, reaching $7.2 billion (₹59,445 crore), and the company anticipates double-digit growth in the current fiscal year. It handles 310 lakh liters of milk per day and has a total processing capacity of 500 lakh liters annually.
Beyond India, GCMMF exports dairy products to 50 countries and has expanded into the United States, launching four fresh milk variants for the Indian and Asian diaspora.
At the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025, West Bengal attracted investment proposals worth $53 billion (₹4.40 lakh crore), as announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
