The Delhi government is set to create a Uniform Policy for Dairy Colonies to address the relocation of 419 dairies in Bhalswa. This policy aims to manage the transition to Ghogha Dairy Colony effectively, balancing regulatory needs with the livelihood concerns of dairy owners. Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj is spearheading the initiative, with a draft policy expected soon. Dairy representatives have requested no immediate relocations until the policy is finalized.
The Delhi government is set to develop a “Uniform Policy for Dairy Colonies” in response to the challenges faced by the 419 dairies in Bhalswa. This initiative aims to address the potential relocation of these dairies to Ghogha Dairy Colony, following a Delhi High Court order. The High Court had previously mandated the shift but granted a temporary reprieve until October.
Delhi’s Development Minister, Saurabh Bhardwaj, has been actively involved in the discussions with dairy representatives. A recent meeting convened by Bhardwaj led to significant decisions regarding the formulation of the policy. The draft policy is expected to be prepared within a week, with input from the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) and the Delhi Urban Shelter Reform Board (DUSIB).
The new policy is intended to provide a structured approach to managing dairy operations in Delhi, aiming to balance the needs of dairy owners with regulatory requirements. Minister Bhardwaj has instructed the relevant departments to expedite the policy finalization process.
During the meeting, dairy representatives expressed their concerns about the impact of relocating to Ghogha Dairy Colony, citing potential livelihood issues and lack of alternative housing. They have requested that no actions be taken to move them until the policy is finalized and reviewed by the Delhi High Court.
Additionally, there has been a proposal to change land use regulations at Ghogha Dairy Colony, which could allow current dairy operations to continue without relocation. This would address the immediate concerns of the dairy owners and help avoid disruption to their livelihoods.
The Delhi government is expected to present the finalized draft policy to the Lieutenant Governor for approval, after incorporating feedback from all stakeholders. This policy aims to ensure a sustainable and equitable solution for the dairy industry in the capital.
