Amul, officially known as The Kaira District Milk Producers Union Limited and a leading dairy cooperative in India, is investing Rs 75-100 crore to establish a new dairy processing plant in Assam. Located near Guwahati on a 20-bigha leased plot under the Advantage Assam 2.0 program, this facility aims to enhance dairy production in the region and support around 20,000 local farmers. This expansion complements Amul’s ongoing projects in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
India’s leading dairy cooperative, The Kaira District Milk Producers Union Limited, popularly known as Amul Dairy, is set to boost dairy production in Assam, expanding its footprint in the eastern part of the country. The cooperative has announced plans to invest between Rs 75 crore and Rs 100 crore to establish a new dairy processing plant near Guwahati.
The Assam government has allocated a 20-bigha plot on a lease basis for this project at the Institute of Farm Management Campus in Rani. The initiative is part of the state’s Advantage Assam 2.0 program, which focuses on enhancing agricultural and dairy sectors in the region.
Amul Dairy Chairman Vipul Patel confirmed the project’s approval by the state cabinet this month. The new plant aims to strengthen the cooperative’s ongoing expansion efforts across India, which include the operational dairy facility in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, and an ice cream factory in Pune, Maharashtra.
The plant is expected to benefit approximately 20,000 local dairy farmers in Assam by providing them with better market access and processing capabilities, thus improving milk production and livelihoods.
This expansion marks a significant step in Amul’s strategy to support dairy development in under-served regions and meet the growing demand for dairy products in India.
