The Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), popularly known as Milma, is in discussions to export its high-value dairy products, including ghee and milk powder, to the United States and Europe. The move marks a significant step in expanding the cooperative’s international footprint.
Milma, a leading dairy cooperative in Kerala, represents nearly 10 lakh registered farmers, with three lakh dairy farmers supplying milk daily. The organization produces a variety of value-added dairy products such as curd, butter, cheese, paneer, ice cream, flavored milk drinks, and yogurt, apart from ghee and milk powder. The cooperative has already gained success in exporting ghee to West Asia and now aims to tap into Western markets.
New Export Potential
Milma Chairman K.S. Mani stated that the organization is exploring the export potential of long-shelf-life dairy products manufactured at its newly inaugurated plant in Moorkanad, Malappuram district. The cooperative is in discussions with international business networks, with agencies expected to visit its production units soon.
Mr. Mani emphasized that the current negotiations aim to ensure that Milma’s dairy products meet international standards in terms of quality, packaging, design, and pricing. He added that once the discussions are finalized, Milma will commence shipments to the U.S. and European markets.
A Milestone for Kerala’s Dairy Industry
Expanding exports to the U.S. and Europe would be a significant achievement for Milma, which has already established a strong domestic market presence, selling approximately 16 lakh liters of milk daily. This step aligns with the cooperative’s long-term goal of strengthening its global brand while supporting Kerala’s dairy farmers.
The entry into these international markets would boost revenue for farmers and further establish India’s dairy industry as a key player on the global stage. Milma’s focus on standardization and innovation is expected to enhance its competitiveness in the highly regulated Western dairy markets.
