Cathedral City, a prominent cheese brand owned by Saputo Dairy UK, is set to expand its plant-based cheese offerings with the introduction of a new Smokey Block SKU. Priced at approximately $4.60 for a 280g block, this launch signifies a notable enhancement to the brand’s plant-based range, which has seen substantial growth since its inception.
The new Smokey Block, making its debut this week exclusively at Tesco stores, is a significant addition to Cathedral City’s ‘Our Plant Based’ range. This follows the brand’s successful introduction of plant-based products nearly two years ago, which has achieved an impressive 65% growth over the past year and reached a retail sales value of £9.1 million (approximately $11.2 million).
The Smokey Block is designed to cater to the rising consumer demand for plant-based options, offering a uniquely creamy yet intensely smoky flavor achieved through natural smoking methods. This product will stand out in the UK market as the only plant-based cheese alternative employing such techniques, setting it apart from other offerings.
Christopher Owens, Head of Marketing for Plant-Based at Saputo Dairy UK, commented, “With the success of Cathedral City Plant-Based, we are exploring new flavor territories to offer more dairy-free options. This launch strengthens our brand’s appeal by providing on-trend flavors in both dairy and plant-based formats.”
The new Smokey Block is designed to melt easily, making it a versatile choice for various hot dishes such as burgers. Its launch will be supported by in-store promotions and online campaigns, joining Cathedral City’s existing ‘Our Plant Based’ range, which includes Block, Grated, Sandwich Slice, and Spreadable formats.
The plant-based cheese market in the UK is valued at £42.2 million (approximately $49.7 million) and is increasingly popular, with 8% of UK households purchasing dairy alternatives. Cathedral City’s latest offering aims to meet this growing demand and further establish the brand’s presence in the plant-based sector.
