A dairy farmer from Dorset, UK, has teamed up with veterinarians to introduce CowRecovery, an innovative system designed to improve the management and welfare of ‘down’ cows while ensuring farm staff safety. The device, which utilizes a specially modified telehandler bucket, aims to reduce injury risks and enhance cattle care.
A groundbreaking device, CowRecovery, is set to transform the management of ‘down’ cows on dairy farms across the UK. Developed by James Yeatman, a dairy farmer from Dorset, in collaboration with farm veterinarians, this innovative system prioritizes both animal welfare and farm worker safety.
CowRecovery, unveiled at Dairy-Tech, incorporates a specially modified telehandler bucket and a unique lifting technique that minimizes injury risks for cows and handlers. It has undergone extensive field trials on 15 dairy farms, involving over 10,000 cows across a 10-month period. The system includes training support from Synergy farm vets to ensure consistent and safe use.
Down cows—those unable to stand due to health complications such as calving issues, milk fever, and metabolic disorders—pose significant challenges for dairy farmers. Without proper handling, these cows can suffer further injuries, and their survival rates decrease. Veterinary experts stress the importance of moving affected cows to well-bedded areas where they can access food, water, and medical care. Rotating them twice daily helps prevent nerve and muscle damage.
Yeatman, who has witnessed the struggles of handling down cows firsthand, emphasized that many farms lack the necessary manpower, equipment, and training to manage these cases efficiently. The CowRecovery system addresses these challenges by providing a practical and safe solution.
The financial impact of losing a cow during early lactation is estimated at £3,499 ($4,425). The device’s developers highlight its return on investment, stating that preventing just two fatalities can offset the cost of implementation.
Looking ahead, dairy farmers will be encouraged to create heat maps of down cow incidents to identify patterns and work with veterinarians on preventative measures. Yeatman believes that CowRecovery will not only improve cow welfare but also enhance working conditions for farm staff.
The launch of CowRecovery marks a significant step forward in modern dairy farming, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to sustainable and humane animal care.
