On June 5, 2025, India’s Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the parent body of Amul, launched its fresh milk products in Spain and the European Union. In partnership with Spain’s top dairy cooperative COVAP, this strategic move marks Amul’s entry into the European fresh milk market, aligning with India’s goal to globalize its dairy presence.
India’s Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), widely known for its flagship dairy brand Amul, has officially launched its fresh milk in Spain and the European Union (EU) on June 5, 2025. This development follows its successful expansion in the United States and marks a significant step toward establishing a global dairy footprint.
GCMMF, headquartered in Anand, Gujarat, is the apex organization of the Amul brand and represents 3.6 million milk producers across India. With a turnover of over USD 11 billion and daily handling of 42 million litres of milk, it is the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative.
Amul’s entry into Europe has been made possible through a strategic partnership with Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (COVAP), a leading dairy cooperative based in Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain. Founded in 1959, COVAP boasts over 2,000 farmer-members and operates one of the most advanced dairy plants in Europe, processing more than 400 million litres of milk annually.
The official launch ceremony was held at the Indian Embassy in Madrid and attended by several dignitaries, including India’s Ambassador to Spain Dinesh K Patnaik and senior Spanish and Indian officials.
Initially, Amul milk will be available in Madrid and Barcelona, with plans for distribution in Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Córdoba, and even Lisbon, Portugal. Expansion plans into Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and other EU nations are also in motion.
Partnering with COVAP allows us to nourish Spanish consumers with the goodness of Amul milk. This launch also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making Amul a truly global dairy brand,” he said.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF
This collaboration benefits both COVAP’s farmer-members and Indian dairy farmers by merging high-quality milk production with Amul’s international recognition.”
Ricardo Delgado Vizcaíno, President of COVAP,
The launch also marks a fitting prelude to the United Nations’ International Year of Cooperatives in 2025, emphasizing the power of farmer-led collaboration in the global dairy industry.
