A Noida resident’s claim of finding a centipede in an Amul ice cream tub has led to an investigation and legal action. The Delhi High Court has ordered the removal of related social media posts, while Amul stands firm on its high-quality standards and is working to resolve the issue.

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, is facing a serious complaint. A resident of Noida has alleged that a toxic insect was found in a tub of Amul ice cream. This claim has led to a comprehensive investigation and legal action.

On June 15, the resident, Deepa Devi, posted on social media about discovering a toxic insect in a tub of Amul ice cream she ordered via a fast delivery app. The post included a photo of the insect in the ice cream tub. This claim prompted the Noida Food Safety Department to begin an investigation.

Amul’s Response

In response, Amul requested Devi to return the ice cream tub for further examination. The company emphasized its commitment to high-quality standards, including state-of-the-art ISO-certified plants and stringent quality checks. Despite efforts to contact Devi and retrieve the ice cream tub, she refused to cooperate, which has complicated the investigation.

Legal Proceedings

The matter escalated to legal action when Amul filed a lawsuit against Devi. On July 4, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order directing Devi to remove her social media posts and refrain from posting any further content related to the claim. Justice Manmeet P.S. Arora noted that Devi and her husband had not appeared for forensic testing of the ice cream tub or participated in the legal proceedings, leading the court to conclude that the complaint might be unfounded.

The court prohibited Devi and her husband from posting or publishing any content related to the complaint on social media or other platforms until further notice.

Amul’s Commitment to Quality

Amul has reaffirmed its commitment to product safety and quality. As a cooperative with annual sales of 22 billion liters of milk across 50+ countries, Amul maintains rigorous quality control measures at every stage of production. The ice cream is produced under stringent conditions to prevent contamination, and the cooperative stands by its high standards.

Amul invited Devi to visit its facilities to observe the quality control processes firsthand. The cooperative remains confident in the purity of its products and is committed to resolving the issue transparently.

Next Steps

Further actions will depend on the outcomes of the investigation and legal proceedings. Amul has requested the return of the ice cream tub to conduct a thorough investigation and address any potential issues. The cooperative continues to emphasize its dedication to consumer safety and product quality, assuring customers of its adherence to high standards.
