Greenhills Farm in East Cork, Ireland, the country’s largest dairy farm, has partnered with renewable energy leader Ørsted to develop a 250 MW solar project. This initiative is expected to power over 52,000 homes annually and aligns with Ireland’s goal of achieving 8 GW of solar energy by 2030.
Greenhills Farm, the largest dairy farm in Ireland, has embarked on a transformative journey toward sustainability by leasing part of its land for a large-scale solar energy project. Partnering with global renewable energy giant Ørsted, the farm will facilitate a 250 MW solar farm, projected to generate electricity for over 52,000 homes annually.
Greenhills Farm, located in East Cork, has long been recognized for its advanced dairy operations, housing over 1,000 cows and implementing state-of-the-art dairy technology. Now, by embracing renewable energy, it is taking a leading role in Ireland’s clean energy future.
“We are proud of our legacy in dairy farming, and now we’re excited to contribute to renewable energy generation,” said Tom Browne of the Browne family, who manages the farm.
Ørsted, a Danish multinational energy company specializing in offshore and onshore wind and solar projects, sees this collaboration as a key step toward Ireland’s national goal of achieving 8 GW of solar power capacity by 2030.
TJ Hunter, Vice President of Onshore Ireland & UK at Ørsted, highlighted the significance of this venture:
This partnership with Greenhills Farm underscores our commitment to expanding Ireland’s renewable energy infrastructure. East Cork’s solar-friendly conditions make this project an ideal move toward sustainability.”
The shift from dairy farming to clean energy production marks a major milestone in Ireland’s efforts to integrate agriculture and sustainability, setting an example for other large-scale farms worldwide.
