Fonterra, New Zealand’s leading dairy co-op, becomes the first pasture-based dairy company to win the Good Dairy Commendation from Compassion in World Farming, recognizing its commitment to animal welfare through sustainable farming practices.

Fonterra, a New Zealand-based dairy co-operative and one of the world’s largest dairy exporters, has made history by becoming the first pasture-based dairy company to receive a Good Dairy Commendation from Compassion in World Farming (CIWF).

The award ceremony, held in Paris, recognized 49 global winners who excel in sustainable farming practices and animal welfare. CIWF, a prominent organization dedicated to improving animal welfare and food production standards, praised Fonterra for its commitment to maintaining high animal wellbeing across its farms.

The Good Dairy Commendation highlights companies with exemplary practices, including ensuring cows have access to pasture, banning tethering, and monitoring welfare using key animal-based indicators. Fonterra’s director of sustainability, Charlotte Rutherford, emphasized that the recognition reflects the efforts of the co-op’s farmer owners who prioritize animal wellbeing.

“Dairy cows are at the heart of our co-op, and we are proud to provide an environment where they thrive. Our On-Farm Excellence team works closely with farmers to demonstrate our high standards to customers and consumers.”
