Malawi’s small-scale dairy farmers are benefiting from solar-powered milking technology, which significantly reduces milking time and improves efficiency. This innovation, led by the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and supported by the National Commission for Science and Technology, aims to enhance milk production and quality of life for rural farmers.

In Malawi, solar-powered milking technology is revolutionizing small-scale dairy farming, significantly enhancing productivity and quality of life for farmers. Robert Mbendera, a dairy farmer from Dedza district, experienced this transformation firsthand after participating in a pilot project led by researchers from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in 2020.

Previously, Mbendera spent 80 minutes milking his cow twice a day. However, with the new solar-powered milking device, he now completes the task in just 8 to 10 minutes. This innovation not only streamlines the milking process but also supplies water directly to his yard, saving him time and effort.

The National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) in Malawi is working to expand this initiative, which is supported by the Science Granting Councils Initiative and implemented in partnership with Orifice Irrigation and Water Supply Limited. The project aims to increase milk production among smallholder farmers, with plans to establish cooperatives to maintain the technology.

The solar-powered system provides water for both livestock and household use, while also generating electricity for lighting, which is vital for milking at dawn and dusk. Notably, market tests conducted during the project period reported zero rejections of the milk produced, indicating improved quality.

The potential for greater female participation in dairy production is also highlighted, as the easy-to-use technology allows for milk production even when men are away. As interest in this technology grows among local farmers, the NCST emphasizes the need for government subsidies and tax waivers to facilitate wider adoption.

By integrating solar technology into dairy farming, Malawi aims to enhance its agro-based economy, providing crucial support to smallholder farmers who dominate the industry.
