Milkfed Punjab sets a new record by purchasing 6.5 million liters of milk daily in FY 2023-2024. Punjab’s Finance Minister highlights efforts to strengthen Sugarfed and launches a new portal supporting women artisans.
Milkfed Punjab, one of the top three milk-product agencies in India, has achieved a major milestone by purchasing a record 6.5 million litres of milk per day during the financial year 2023-2024. This achievement was highlighted by Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during the state-level event marking the 71st All India Cooperation Week.
Milkfed, a state-owned cooperative, is integral to Punjab’s dairy industry, playing a significant role in providing quality milk and milk-based products to consumers. Its efforts have not only boosted milk production but also supported the local economy and livelihoods in the state.
During his address, Minister Cheema also praised the efforts of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in revitalising Sugarfed, a cooperative sugar manufacturing body that had previously faced liabilities exceeding Rs 40 million. Cheema explained that under the current government, these liabilities have been cleared, and the institution has been significantly strengthened. As a result, the area under sugarcane cultivation has increased from approximately 124,000 acres in 2022-2023 to 139,000 acres in 2024-2025.
Furthermore, Cheema highlighted the success of the Bhogpur Cooperative Sugar Mill, where a 14 MW cogeneration plant powered by paddy straw earned about $1.85 million in 2023-2024. This initiative has contributed to the profitability and sustainability of Sugarfed, bringing it from a loss-making entity to one that is now showing positive returns.
In his speech, Cheema referred to the cooperation department as the “backbone” of Punjab’s economic development, underscoring its critical role in the state’s growth. As part of the event, Cheema also launched a new web portal called Phulkari, developed by the cooperation department. The portal is designed to provide a global sales platform for the handmade products crafted by women artisans across Punjab, giving them greater exposure and economic opportunities.
Through these efforts, the Punjab government aims to support rural development, enhance agricultural productivity, and empower local artisans, all of which contribute to the state’s economic vitality.
