Tetra Pak, a Swedish multinational packaging firm, has become the first company in India’s food and beverage packaging industry to incorporate certified recycled polymers into its packaging. Starting April 1, 2025, the new carton packages will include 5% certified recycled polymers, in compliance with India’s Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2022. The initiative supports sustainability and the circular economy by promoting the use of recycled materials in food packaging.
Tetra Pak, a Swedish multinational known for its food and beverage packaging solutions, has announced the introduction of packaging materials incorporating certified recycled polymers in India. The company is the first in the country’s food and beverage packaging industry to take this step, aligning with the Indian government’s sustainability goals. This move complies with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2022 and will be implemented starting April 1, 2025.
The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change introduced the amendment to encourage the use of recycled content in packaging and reduce plastic waste. Tetra Pak’s new carton packages will feature 5% certified recycled polymers, contributing to a circular economy while ensuring food safety. The packaging material is certified by ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), an internationally recognized sustainability certification system.

Simões also praised the Indian government’s proactive stance on sustainability regulations, highlighting the opportunity for the food and beverage industry to transition towards more circular solutions. The recycled polymers used in Tetra Pak’s packaging come from chemical recycling technology, ensuring compliance with global food contact regulations while maintaining the quality of virgin polymers.
The adoption of recycled content in packaging supports global efforts to enhance recycling rates and improve the economic feasibility of recycling. Tetra Pak aims to transition to fully renewable or recycled polymer-based packaging in the future, reducing dependence on fossil feedstock. This initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable innovation in the packaging industry.
