The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an inquiry into Müller’s acquisition of Yew Tree Dairy, a respected family-owned dairy company based in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire. Founded in 1904, Yew Tree Dairy is known for its fresh milk and cream production and has recently expanded into milk powder production. The CMA’s investigation seeks to assess whether this merger could significantly impact competition within the UK dairy market.

Details of the Acquisition

In June, Müller Dairy (UK) completed the acquisition of Yew Tree Dairy. Müller plans to utilize Yew Tree’s milk powder production capabilities to boost its export business, enhance supply chain resilience, and support the British dairy industry’s future. Additionally, Müller intends to invest in expanding the Skelmersdale milk drying facility, subject to CMA approval.

CMA’s Request for Feedback

The CMA has invited comments from stakeholders regarding any competition concerns related to the merger. Interested parties must submit their written representations by September 10.

Müller’s Vision and Plans

Müller UK & Ireland, part of Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller, employs over 32,000 people across Europe. The company produces a broad range of dairy products, including branded and private-label items made from milk sourced from 1,300 British farmers. Müller also offers a plant-based product range. CEO Rob Hutchison expressed confidence in the merger, highlighting the synergy between Müller and Yew Tree Dairy’s capabilities.

Carl Woodcock, director at Yew Tree Dairy, noted that the decision to join Müller was driven by the desire for new growth opportunities while retaining the company’s farming roots. He believes that becoming part of a larger organization will benefit staff, farmers, and customers in the long term.
