In the UK, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has announced it is closely observing Muller’s acquisition of Yew Tree Dairy, approved by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on October 30. Muller, a prominent dairy processor, acquired Yew Tree Dairy, a family-run business in Lancashire specializing in milk powder production, as part of its growth strategy aimed at enhancing exports. The NFU has urged Muller to ensure transparent communication with farmers affected by the acquisition.

The acquisition was first announced in June, with Muller expressing its commitment to bolstering the British dairy sector. The company has emphasized that this move reflects its dedication to a “better dairy future,” especially through investing in Yew Tree’s milk drying facilities. Paul Tompkins, chair of the NFU dairy board, commented, “It’s encouraging to see Muller’s commitment to the UK dairy sector, which underscores the potential for growth in British dairy, particularly in exports.”

Following the acquisition, Muller plans to engage with Yew Tree Dairy’s approximately 450 dairy suppliers. The company confirmed that it will maintain the existing milk collection processes, contract terms, and payment structures at Yew Tree Dairy. CEO of Muller Milk & Ingredients, Rob Hutchison, highlighted that the company would invest in Yew Tree’s milk drying operations, positioning it as a key player in producing and exporting British-made powdered milk products. Hutchison added, “For suppliers, this acquisition brings a positive outlook for long-term milk supply,” underlining Muller’s aim to establish a robust, export-focused supply chain with milk sourced from British farms.
