Vratsa, Bulgaria is hosting its first-ever Bulgarian Cheese and Dairy Festival, organized by the Bulgarian Traditional Dairy Products Association. The event highlights both traditional and exotic dairy products, including donkey and mare cheese, alongside cultural and educational activities for both consumers and industry professionals.

Vratsa, a city in northern Bulgaria, is hosting its inaugural Bulgarian Cheese and Dairy Festival, a vibrant two-day celebration that brings together a wide range of dairy products, from traditional goat, cow, and sheep cheeses to the more exotic donkey and mare cheeses. The festival is organized by the Bulgarian Traditional Dairy Products Association and is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Municipality of Vratsa.

This unique event not only showcases the rich dairy heritage of Bulgaria but also highlights the country’s growing reputation for diverse and high-quality dairy products. One of the festival’s key attractions is a Vratsa-style breakfast, where visitors can enjoy mekitsi, a sweet pastry served with cheese, a beloved local delicacy.

Throughout the festival, there will be several exciting activities for attendees. A demonstration on the making of white brined cheese will provide an insight into traditional dairy production methods. Chef Svetlana Ilieva will lead a masterclass, while competitions will feature traditional dishes such as lyutika, a spicy tomato spread, and a painting contest centered on dairy themes.

A bustling bazaar will offer visitors the chance to sample and purchase Bulgarian cheeses, traditional sweets, wines, and eco-friendly products. For the first time, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite dairy producer.

In addition to the culinary experiences, a scientific forum will explore topics such as donkey milk and the future of Bulgarian dairy production, offering valuable insights for farmers and processors. Cultural performances by prominent Bulgarian artists, including Rumyana Popova, Raina, and the Pirin duo, will add to the festive atmosphere.

This event represents a significant step for the Bulgarian dairy industry, combining tradition, innovation, and cultural exchange to celebrate the country’s rich dairy heritage.
