The Kerala government hosts ‘Ksheeravasantham 2024,’ a dairy farmers’ meet aimed at enhancing milk procurement and production through cooperation among key stakeholders in the dairy industry, addressing current shortages, and supporting local dairy farmers in the face of climate challenges.
The government of Kerala, India, is actively working to enhance milk procurement through dairy cooperatives to meet the state’s demand, as announced by Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J. Chinchurani during the inauguration of ‘Ksheeravasantham 2024,’ a dairy farmers’ meet. The event, organized jointly by the Dairy Development Department and Vettikkavala Block Panchayat, aims to promote collaboration among various stakeholders in the dairy sector.
Minister Chinchurani emphasized the initiative’s goal of increasing domestic milk production by bringing together key players, including the Animal Husbandry Department, Kerala Feeds Limited (KFL), Kerala Livestock Development Board, and Milma, the Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation. She noted that last Onam, the state recorded exceptional sales of milk and curd. However, current figures indicate a shortage of two lakh liters at Milma, primarily due to challenges posed by climate change and extreme heat, which are adversely affecting milk production.
To address these issues, the Kerala government is implementing various measures aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in milk production while providing benefits to local dairy farmers.
The meet also saw Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal presiding over the function, during which outstanding dairy farmers who have contributed to the sector’s development were recognized and honored. The event was attended by local leaders, including Vettikkavala Block Panchayat President S. Ranjith Kumar, various village panchayat presidents, officials, and a gathering of dairy farmers.
As Kerala, India, continues to strive for self-sufficiency in dairy production, initiatives like ‘Ksheeravasantham 2024’ play a vital role in fostering collaboration and support within the agricultural community, ultimately benefiting both producers and consumers across the state.
