The USDA has committed $15 million to expand markets for organic dairy products in Vermont schools, youth programs, and universities, boosting opportunities for local dairy farmers and enhancing access to nutritious options for students. The program, coordinated by the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center, aims to replicate Vermont’s successful local dairy-supply model across the nation.

On November 15, 2024, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a $15 million investment to expand markets for Vermont’s organic dairy farmers, aiming to increase access to organic dairy products in K-12 schools, youth programs, colleges, and universities. The USDA’s initiative, named the Organic Dairy Product Promotion Program, will help Vermont’s organic dairy industry by creating new distribution channels across educational institutions. Senator Peter Welch, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, described the program as a “win-win” for the state’s economy and its young consumers.

The funding for this program will be provided through the Commodity Credit Corporation, a USDA financing body established in 1933 to support American farms. In Vermont, the program is facilitated by the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center, a branch within the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, which collaborates with local dairies to enhance product reach and support innovation in the dairy sector.

The announcement took place at Miller Farm in Vernon, a recipient of USDA funds that supplies organic milk to several local schools. Peter Miller of Miller Farm expressed pride in helping students connect with the origins of their food and emphasized his desire to see similar programs implemented nationwide. This initiative underscores Vermont’s commitment to supporting its organic dairy industry while fostering healthier food options for the state’s youth.
