The Delhi High Court has mandated the relocation of all dairies from Bhalswa Dairy Colony to Ghogha Dairy Colony due to encroachment and adverse conditions. The court’s interim order allows dairy operators until August 23 to file affidavits detailing their livestock and relocation plans, following a previous order for relocation within four weeks. Concerns over animal cruelty and unsanitary conditions at Bhalswa Dairy, along with opposition from local residents and misinformation about fatalities, have influenced the court’s decision.
The Delhi High Court has mandated the relocation of all dairies from Bhalswa Dairy Colony, located in North-West Delhi, to Ghogha Dairy Colony in a bid to address encroachment issues and improve conditions in the area. The court’s interim order, initially set from August 9, has been extended to August 23, granting dairy operators additional time to file affidavits detailing their livestock and relocation plans.
Background and Previous Orders
The controversy surrounding Bhalswa Dairy dates back to July 24, when the High Court first ordered the relocation of all dairies from Bhalswa to Ghogha Dairy Colony within four weeks. This directive was issued in response to concerns over encroachment and the adverse conditions experienced by both the animals and local residents. In compliance with this order, the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) had begun preparations for demolition, which led to substantial resistance from dairy operators.
Temporary Suspension of Demolition Actions
On August 13, the DMC informed the High Court that it would halt demolition activities at Bhalswa Dairy until August 16. This suspension followed strong opposition from local residents and reports of heavy police presence during attempted demolitions. The court had previously criticized misinformation regarding fatalities during these proceedings, underscoring the need for accurate reporting.
Concerns Over Animal Cruelty and Unhygienic Conditions
The High Court’s decision follows a petition filed by Sunayna Sibal, Ashar Jesudaus, and Aksita Kukreja, which highlighted severe animal welfare issues and unsanitary conditions at the dairies. The petition raised alarms about cruelty and poor living conditions for animals, exacerbated by the dairies’ proximity to a landfill site. The court’s order aims to ensure the dairies’ relocation to Ghogha Dairy Colony and address these concerns in a structured manner.
The relocation of Bhalswa Dairy is a significant step in addressing environmental and animal welfare issues while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
